Summary

The works at John Radcliffe Hospital saw the refurbishment and remodelling of the CL2 and CL3 laboratories to form new better designed lab spaces. This was a phased project so that labs could remain live throughout the works.

One issue that arose during the validation of the existing services. The ventilation had to be completely redesign for the new laboratories after it was realised that the existing hospital ventilation system could neither make the areas cold enough or hot enough. The practical solution was to install two air source heat pumps. This allowed the labs to be kept within a very tight temperature range.

The works included extensive data and power updates, the cabling for these was installed in the main hospital corridor. This modification to the services in the ceiling void meant that we had to update the fire detection in this area. The challenge was to get the detection into an extremely congested area. We worked with the fire officer to allow lightweight detectors that did not need to be fixed to the soffit.
